Hey does anyone know if this thing is any good?

Some on here (dubtrub) needs to lay down some tracks so that, oh I don't know, maybe his kids can have a decent recording of what he plays. Would you believe we don't have any recordings of him playing! It just isn't right! I mention this one because the last time I brought this up he said was looking for a 4 channel recorder instead of something like the DR01 or DR07.

I remember telling Danny about the Tascam DP 02 a while back. He and I were both looking
for a Multitrack Recorder, but I got sidelined quite a few times in the past few months, and
now my latest project has turned into a updating the house (sort of a Spring Cleaning?).....
but maybe I'll be 'due' for some new toys....??? .....oh,come on, just a few.......

I've got a Akai DPS-16 which, shockingly enough, has 16 tracks, and can record 8 simultaneously. If there's any chance you might want to record a jam session, the more simulaneous tracks the better. For my band, that means I can get two overhead drum mikes, kick, snare, and one channel for each other instrument (bass, keyboard, two guitars). Something to consider. A built in CD burner is nice; the DPS-16 doesn't have one so I have to mix down to an external burner.

Hey Mel, you bring up a pretty good point. Do you have yours setup in a permanent location or is it portable? I'm thinking more ease of use (so it would be used) as opposed to something you have to setup.

I couldn't find the Akai DPS-16 that you mentioned but the DP-02 seems pretty interesting. I do like the simplicity of the DP004 and the other portable self-contained units like the DR-01, DR-07 and the GT-01.

I still suck so recording what I'm playing would be more for training and learning instead of creating real music (although I am getting better) but for my dad he just needs to start recording stuff because man that guy can play!

The DPS-16 is portable. I think it's out of production now; I bought it about six years ago and have used it to record five albums, several live shows and countless demos. Most of the units out there are good, you just need to decide what features matter to you - how many tracks, how many simultanous inputs, built in effects, CD burner, faders, eq, whatever is important to you.
