Modifying a Jaguar/Jazzmaster with Mosrite pups?

Postby 101Volts » Mon Jul 13, 2009 2:43 pm

I don't own one but I was wondering what kind of an effect I would get if I put Mosrite single coils in a Jaguar or Jazzmaster. How would it sound?

That is a great question. I own a Jazzmaster but don't play it as much as my Mosrites because the pickups on the Mosrite KILL the Fender!!!! If I play the JM by itself at a show it's fine but if I play the Mosrite and then go to the JM there is a tremendous difference. It would be a great experiment. :ugeek:

I changed the pickups in my Mosrite Excellent, and put the old ones in a Gretsch Pro Jet that I won in a drawing. It sounds "better" now (compared to the old Gretsch pickups), but I'm not sure I'd say it sounds like a Mosrite. I'm sure the wood makes a huge difference.

Fritz, I realize pickups are only part of a guitar's overall sound. I'm just trying to figure out what it would sound like if I put some Mo' pickups (Single coil or humbuckers) In a Jazzmaster because I'm considering buying one some time.

the woods on a JM and Mosrite (ventures model) is pretty much the same. maple necks with a rosewood fretboard, and an basswood body. some might be alder, but if I remember right JM were always basswood.
this was kinda surprising to me, i figured the jazzmaster pickup would be closer to the mosrite pickup. does anyone know what kind of magnets are used in the JM? I'm pretty sure most mosrites have alnico V's. i think eddy could fill us in more on that ;)
also different mosrite pickups were wound hotter then others throughout the years....
Cheers,
Aaron

The Vintage Jazzmaster were Alder and Ash, never Basswood. The Japanese Jazzmasters are mostly Basswood, the USA version is Alder like the old ones. The pu's on the Vintage ones are Alnico Scatterwound, cloth wire, so is the USA RI.
