Any expert suggestions on how to remove the overlay, or should I just paint the headstock, and apply my own logo?

all depends how thick the overlay is and what it is made of. if its a wood veneer I doubt you will be able to remove it with destroying it in the process.

Thanks. It looks to me like some form of plastic, so probably the same result...I'll save my time for finishing and detailing... Pictures to come soon!

Okay, this is where I am with the project...

I extended the tongue of the neck under the bridge pickup, and made it as thick as possible, still clearing the underside of the pickup.

Here's the back view... What looks like a chip in the center of the angle is the hole for the strap button.

And the whole guitar. Sorry, I'm no photographer, I know, but you'll be able to get the basic idea.

Here's some more pics, as the project approaches completion: The guitar will get a new brass nut, and a complete set-up, then should be ready for some young person to start learning to twang...

Some interesting grain on this neck...
