Speaking of Joe Maphis, there is a 13 year old kid in Australia, Bryan Browne, he definately has the Joe Maphis influence with his country pickin'. It's very ironic that someone would take up this style of playing in this date and time at such an early age. He is very versatile especially with classical but his can get down with the best of the 'ho downers', check out his 'Come Alive Polka' on My Space and the link on YouTube. I found his link while visiting TNM Guitars where he is having a Joe Maphis double neck style guitar custom built.

Not to me it isn't! When I started playing guitar in the mid 80s, most of my peers were obsessing over Eddioe Van Halen and Randy Rhoads while my guitar heroes and role models were Scotty Moore, Cliff Gallup, Joe Maphis, Earl Hooker, and Tiny Grimes. Then again I was a weird kid that grew into a weird adult.

When I was a kid, during the summer we use to drive down to LA and stay at my uncle's house about once a month just to watch the Town Hall Party Show. Naturally my favorite part was Joe Maphis and Larry Collins. Course Lorrie Collins wasn't bad to look at either. Then one lucky day I was at Semie's little shop on Miner St. in Oildale, and there was Joe Maphis's double neck in for a neck change. Semie had changed the neck's with 6 on one side tuner's for the 'M' shaped headstock. Since I was drooling, Semie allowed me few minutes of playing Joe's double neck. It's funny how things like that have an ever lasting memory. The following is a link of Joe playing his double neck to the tune 'Flying Fingers'. Ahhh! what memories.

Exactly how is that octave neck tuned? I have looked at a number of U-tubes, and can't quite figure it out. All I could guess is at the nut of the "upper short neck" you are at the same pitches as the 12th fret on a standard neck. Is that it?
I checked out TNM Guitars website. I wonder if he would make a Mark 1 style complete with the flame maple top and 5 tone sunburst? I wonder if I could afford it!

Standard tuning one octave higher. Like having a normally tuned guitar with a capo at the 12th fret.
