The reason I ask, is we Have been having a rather heated discussion about Hide Glue Vs. Aliphatic resin, on the Acoustic Guitar Forum I say, overall usefulness, ease of use, cost. Hands down, Aliphatic Resin is a better choice. Old timers ( I'm one also ) argue hide glue holds better Blah, Blah, Blah. Does that benefit justify (If it is reality, which I'm not convinced ) the cost, storing issues, different grades for thinner material use, has to be heated.
Aliphatic Resin, Open, use. Store anywhere, need it thinned, add water. Bonds, I've never had a Aliphatic Resin bond break, NEVER. Made some wicked saves, not possible with Hide Glue. On and on.
I remember my Dad using hide Glue when I was a kid. But that as ALL there was. Not now. Time to come up to speed, and join the 21st century.

Yeah, Carpenters glue is great If you want a permanent bond. But if you ever want to remove the work piece, Hide has its advantages (frets for instance) There's a tool and a glue for every job.

Working on Pickup rings and Covers

I have had problems drilling correctly spaced holes for the pickups ( I screwed this one up pretty bad.) Brad points would certainly help with them walking.

I finally took the time to make some proper templates. That should help


Hooray now my Pickups are completely made by yours truly by hand.

Also Star Wars is happening in a year. Get out from under a rock. I read this book in about 3 days, and it made the Prequels almost bearable (yes, it was that good of a story) Why was'nt THIS movie made!

Those pickups are nice looking. Did you use the silicone mold, and resin method.
How about installing flashing L.E.D.'s to make the swirl stand out.

Yes sir, and that sound like alot of work at the moment. I was thinking of putting LEDs in the fret board at one point, but the guitar is flashy enough as is.

Hot Wax for a bad time





Polishing off the pickup construction was pretty much the last thing i had to do. I debated whether I should wax or lacquer pot my pups.

for next time


I did not like trying to fill the cover with wax the cover started to warp from the heat and I spilled boiling wax all over my left hand and on the stove top. Not worth the trouble in my opinion. Maybe just potting the bobbin and then filling the cover with epoxy would be the best compromise.


The lacquer potted pickup I filled the cover with epoxy and I prefer this method over wax for sure. Its not as messy to me and epoxy cleans up with paint thinner.


Once the pups were finished I could get the electronics all wired up.






And made the cavity covers






I'm basically finished with the construction, I am STILL having problems with one low buzzing fret so I will have to level it again (sigh) by tomorrow the guitar will be officially finished. I will try and record some audio or put a YouTube video up.
