MARK IV (no polepiece) pickups anatomy

Postby Defiler2004 » Fri Oct 12, 2018 4:14 am

Good afternoon dear forum members!
First of all, would like to thank you for great feedback on my questions, that's a sign of a community.

I'm particularly interested in pickups installed in Mark II / Mark IV / Gospel, the one that Mr. Cobain had. I've digged the forum and was able to find some info
(viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4406
but most often the pickups discussed are regarding the pole-pieced ones and the thread mentioned above is photo-dead.

There is no patents issued any other than https://patents.google.com/patent/US3237502 so i have no idea what was inside of these "closed" pickups.

BTW - many kudos to Mr. Ed Elliott and his Facebook page - I've found out how these covers and rings were made.

Recent "reissue" of Cobain's Gospel model (https://eastwoodguitars.com/collections ... mark-iv-kc) doesn't help. Even Eastwood's Michael Robinson wasn't able to tell me (i've mailed him) what was onboard on these guitars and are they suppose to retrofret real Mosrites.

So I would really appreciate if you will help with dimensions of the pickups, cover, magnets (10 pieces, right?) and photos if possible.

Check with Bob Shade of Hallmark guitars. He makes a Gospel now with the smooth top pickups.

I have a vintage mid circa 1965 Mark V but I don't know the design of the pickups under the hood so to speak.

Well, I've PM'd Mr. Shade, hope he will reply.

On eBay there is a Mark II smooth cover pickup for sale. It's $175 or make an offer. If you get that you can disect it and learn more about it first hand, unless it's too expensive. I can understand that because now I couldn't spend $175 on a pickup, but that is an option.

I have a set I could gently disassemble but I won't be doing that just yet. I'd like to know how they're made myself, what magnets are used, etc.

More recently, I was wondering if perhaps the 1965 Ventures II "Slab" Pickups and the Ventures II "Carved" / Mark V (including theGospel variant) / Celebrity III Pickups are the same thing, but with different casing. It could make sense, but is that what they did?
