Stringing split post tuners

My Hallmark 60 Custom has Kluson type, split post tuners. I've never restrung this type. Is there a specific measure of length you cut each string to, before inserting it into the hole? Any other "tricks" I should know about? Thanks in advance for any input.

Also, to other 60 Custom owners....has your tremolo arm gotten very lose? Mine is swinging like a monkey. I asked Bob shade about it and he recommended replacing the "paper washer" with a leather one and putting some loctite (blue I presume) on the screw. Just curious if others have had this problem.

I usually give my self about 1- 1-1/2" slack at the headstock and then put the string end in the hole then wind it. Just enough string to get at least two wraps around the tuning post.

On my Mosrites I usually leave about two tuning pegs worth of string on the end - ie. for the low E, I hold the string out and cut it where it meets the D string tuner. Then I stick the end down the hole in the post and wind. Gives three or so turns. On Fenders with the SafeTPost tuners, I measure out three tuning pegs worth for the cut.

As for the loosening arm, DubTrub came up with using the plastic that holds 6-packs of 20oz Coke bottles together to make an extra washer. That along with the thread lock has kept the arm on my guitar just where I want it - able to move side to side with a little effort and not hanging limp. Search the forum for the thread on this technique.

Thanks. I really like these split posts. Very clean look and you don't catch your polish rag on the string end. :D

I'm surprised, with all the guitars I've owned, I've never run across them before. The leather I had for the washer on the arm was too thick. I wasn't aware of how the arm connected to the base. That square ID washer is a PITA to get lined up again. You really can't use anything of any thickness or it won't go back together. Getting to the screw was no picnic either. I just put some blue loctite on it and cranked the screw tight. It's working great, right now. We'll see how long that lasts.

Next time I do a string change I'll try the plastic. I'm also going to replace that POS screw with a socket head cap screw. A hex key would be much easier to loosen and tighten. *NOTE TO BOB SHADE* ;)

On the swinging arm....I haven't taken the strings off yet to tighten the screw...I wound some dental floss between the space...It works !

Now, that's what I call field expediency. ;)
