looking for a spring reverb for amp

Postby rog43win » Wed Dec 29, 2010 8:54 am

I thought someone might be able to help me find a spring reverb unit....

One of my amps, a "Sound"- Model # X 305 R ........the spring reverb in it broke, so I removed it and took it to a guitar store where the guy who repairs guitars and amps had it for a long time....the store went out of business, and I never saw my broken reverb again.....

It's just a long unit that screws into the amp....the spring that hooks inside the piece was broken on one end

I was hoping that such a unit could be generic, not necessarily a Sound ....

The Sound amp is from California....has a 15" speaker, and looks similar to a Fender Super Reverb amp.....only gray....I bought it in the late 60's.....

I'd use the amp more if the reverb worked in it.........any help would be appreciated.....

Thanks.......Roger

Hey, Roger--

Look up the "Replacement Reverb Tank" thread on this forum. Lots of info:

You have to have the exact tank for your specific amp or it won't work correctly.

Good luck!

@Jim......thanks, Jim.....I think I'm up the creek on this one.....I had already taken the unit to the repair shop, and the shop is gone now........
Unless I can contact Sound .....which I think is no longer in business......I bought that amp 40 yrs ago, lol....
I'll google Sound and see what I can find.......thanks, again.......

That model number and speaker size is the same as a Univox 305R, which is a 15" version of the U202R, I'll look at mine and get you the specs, give me a day or 2. It may be a rebranded Univox, does it use 6973 power tubes?

On any spring reverb tank, the only important spec is the input transducer impedance. Technically there are other factors, but the one that will make or break the reverb effect is the input matching between the tank and the amp.

Back in the old days, there were two basic types of tanks available from Hammond. One had a low impedance input for use with a transformer driven input and the other had a medium input impedance, to be used with a non-transformer driven input.

Can you tell if the reverb is driven by a tube? If it is a tube, does it use a transformer to drive the tank?
