I think either guitar is capable of rockabilly as well as surf sounds. Check out this video of Phil Baugh where he mimics a bunch of the big name pickers of the day. While he's playing a Mosrite double neck, the pickups are the same as the ones the Hallmark is based on.

As for the DD model, Deke's video shows the sounds are there too.

I love this video! Phil Baugh's nephew (Joe Baugh) is a friend on mine and lives here in Ventura.

:!: OMG :!:

How is that I have never heard of that guy? I think you changed my life by posting that :D

Is the half of the guitar he is playing similar to the Mosrite model used by the Ventures? Sure sound like it could be chambered similar to the DD model?

So I want to hear a couple of you guys with C60s cover that tune, if you don't mind. You know...so I can make a decision ;)

Mel, which Hallmark model? That's a Joe Maphis Mosrite, isn't it (sorry for my ignorance - I am newbie!) - and isn't that what the DD tried to copy (more or less)?

I am going share that vid with every guitar playing friend I have (and my wife already).

The guitar Phil is playing is a solid body with the same pickups and vibrato as the Ventures models. In 62 or thereabouts, Semie released single neck and a double neck solid body guitars as the "Joe Maphis Model" The single neck became the Ventures model. The double neck production continued through the 60s but most came with a 12 string neck instead of the octave neck.

The Deke Dickerson Hallmark is based on the 50s hollowbody Mosrites, like Joe's famous double neck, that had Carvin AP6 pickups, which have a totally different and unique construction.

Sarah, next time you see Joe Baugh, let him know that his uncle's guitar playing continues to inspire.

Hey, beenawhile--

If you are considering Hallmarks suitable for rockabilly, you might want to look at the Stradette model. Lorie Collins plays a silver one, I believe. Deke has an original Gruggett one that is quite striking.

As Mel points out, all these types of guitar are capable of working well in several styles.

Enjoy the search!

I'll do that Mel. It's amazing to me how someone so good could be so unknown.

Sarah, He wasn't unknown in the studio. He was one of if not the most sought after session players in Nashville at the time. He suffered a bad Heart attack and had to slow way down. He as the staff guitarist on a show that was on TNN back in the 80's (I can't remember the name of it) and later passed away with another Heart attack.

Mel, Thanks for the nice history lesson! I know you have played with pups...I wonder if the tapped setting on your custom pups is anything like the DD/50s Maphis?

Sarah, I am glad we providing a forum to honor Phil - I am really excited to learn of him. I want the tab to that song (for a life long learning project)!

I am really encourage by the support you are all giving to the C60. As much as the DD intrigues me, it does sound like the C60 is my best bet.

Oh, Jim Page, I did try a Stradette (there is a C60 and a Stradette hanging above the counter at Centaur Music in Portland - as of last week). I like it, though the frets are a bit too jumbo for me. I really like the custom burst finishes on those!

Jim, that's very interesting to learn that. I didn't know. It's neat knowing that Joe is also a sought after session guitarist. He plays in a couple of bands locally and gives guitar lessons but when called upon to record he is on it!
