Serial number 90043 dates the guitar to 1990, number 43. Dunno about the JEG but I'd say a previous owner did that. Also looks like they were out of 6-string roller saddles and used 12-string saddles instead.

Also, if there are no stray screw holes the Grovers could certainly be originally. In 1990 they were using whatever they happened to have on hand.

That's an interesting tidbit; I'd assumed the saddles were like that on purpose to allow for string spacing changes (i.e. similar to Fender Jaguar / Jazzmaster bridges). And there were no stray screw holes that I could see.

I asked the manager at GC who took the trade if the previous owner told them anything about it, but he said no. So it has no paperwork or history at all really. It makes me wonder if GC just didn't do their research or what...typically when they get trades like this, they ask as much as possible. Maybe they just don't know what they have here?

Like Adam said, if there are no extra holes on the back of the headstock then the tuners are likely original. I know in the mid 1970's they were putting Grover Roto-Matics on Celebrities. The neck plate looks pretty cool!

I don't know how true this is, but, my luthier told me that Guitar Center spent a couple of years snatching up very nice vintage instruments with the intent of creating another sales arm for vintage gear. When the economy downturned that project was dropped and they were left with warehouses and warehouses of vintage gear in Los Angeles. They supposedly set up areas in key stores that sells "Used Gear" and "Vintage Gear". They've been careful not to flood the market and cause prices to plummet. So, I don't know if there is any truth to this as I got it second hand. I do know our local GC has both of these "sections" in their store.

Hmmm, I wouldn't doubt that at all. But I don't think our store is one of those...we don't often get vintage / rare gear in, and when we do, it's almost always overpriced. We do have a used section, but it's full of cheapo models taken in on trade. We're pretty far away from LA :D Thanks for the insight though!

The first time I had seen that neck plate,
I thought to myself: "Wow! Semie finally came up with a neck plate that will destroy.....a belt buckle!"
