Just an opinion, of course, but I thought I'd weigh in on this, having several Japanese and original Mosrites, in addition to 5 Hallmarks. The late 60s Japanese (no Ranger logo, though) clone is a very nice, playable axe, with some of the best sounding p'ups of any I own. The later Japanese Kurokumo/Fillmore Rangers, etc. are well built, thin-necked, low-action Mosrites, and little easier to play than the originals. Original Mosrites are super low action, high output p'ups, but not given to a lot of bending or pull-offs, making any 'blues' style a bit of a challenge.

For all around performance, playability, sound, AND affordability, my vote still goes to the Hallmark C60, or similar models (Gospel - LOVE my Gospel). Versatile, well-built, probably my most played guitar.

Thanks for the tip, 'Phib. I called Western Hills and they told me about the clean but no case 70s Japan Combo they are selling for $800. Kind of got my heart set on a MkI model more than a semi-hollow. For hollow body guitar, I'll go with a 3-p'up Silvertone to replace my lost Harmony Rocket. The Silvertone has been my dream guitar, the one that got away (@$100!) when I was 19.
