I would just like to point out that Fillmore has been putting out American-made instruments from a very small Hollywood custom shop for a number of years. These are made for the Japanese market and are of very high quality, and an equally high price tag.

It should also be noted that economically speaking, the cost of producing goods in Japan is virtually identical to their US counterparts, which is why much of the world's manufacturing has migrated to the Asian mainland.

i just want to agree with almost all points expressed here. but i have to say that it's about time we all start recognizing what it costs to make or buy something no matter what the product.

if you are willing to buy something for less money than it would normally cost for your neighbors to make it, then you are, in essence, screwing them out of work.

we need to start thinking about our communities and country when we spend our money.

sending money to foreign countries so that we can buy stuff cheaper here only takes money away from our own communities(not to mention the exploitation practiced there).


i was very happy to see a kid in a music store yesterday, get his mom to drop big bucks to buy him a bass for music school that was made by a local luthier and musician. that luthier in turn has been learning the ropes from another old school builder. and so it goes.

As much as I would like to see Mosrite, Gretsch, Fender and other companies make guitars in the USA and only in the USA it just ain't going to happen due to unions, environmental laws, the cost of benefits and medical coverage for employees, the list just goes on. Rickenbacker is the only major guitar company that only makes their product here in the States and they cost a fortune.

I feel most people in the American workforce look to make maximum pay for minimum work.

Good points all around. I paid some serious dough for a custom Crestwood Deluxe copy made by a guy in France. It seemed like a TON OF DOUGH at the time but when I see some of the stuff that's out there it was actually more than reasonable. Heck, I paid almost that much for a Mosrite from Ed Roman when I believed that he was making them here. That being said, that Mosrite is awesome, just don't like that I feel I was totally lied to. As for the Gretsch comment, even Billy Zoom said the best guitars now are coming out of Japan! I have a '55 Gretsch, a recently sold a '95 Gretsch, and a couple of new ones. The new ones are AWESOME, best of the bunch! The '55 had a neck reset and still has dead spots. I dunno, if you have the dough the newer Mosrites are great, and Hallmark, really, I can't say enough great things about those guys. I don't know how they do it at those prices, seriously. First thing this year, if they have any batwings left I will most likely get one, and I am definitely getting a Sheena.
