Having painted many custom cars with custom finishes sense the late 60's I can say that the sparkle finishes are done with metal flake finishes. Metal flake is a large flake in many different colors. You first spray a base color that is close to the metal flake color. The burst around the outer portion of the guitar is then done with a candy apple color that is translucent and lets the sparkle show through. It could be any color. Then you apply a LOT of clear and let it cure and do a LOT of sanding to get it level.More clear is applied and final sanding and buffing. This is not an easy finish to do and requires a large amount of clear.

There's a seller on eBay that has the base products you need for painting pearls and metal flake. Metal Flake & Pearl

thanks guys. my brother plays fender squier supersonics, and he can hear a different in the tone between the models painted in a solid color compared to a metal flake.

SleeperNY summed it up nicely! The one thing I would add is you will have a mess to clean up. There will be sparkles everywhere and you better clean your equipment good before using again!! :D
