In my quest to find the right double neck I would love some opinions on this one. At this moment I am still leaning toward a NOS 2007 Gretsch Duo Jet doubleneck (12/6 arrangement). I've played the guitar and like it very much. I keep returning to eBay to look at Gibson SG double necks, Ibanez copies of same, and of course the Mosrite Joe Maphis double necks.

My prime objective is to have a double neck 12/6 that I can gig with. Therefore, the Gretsch is in the forefront. But if I add the "vintage" aspect to it I wonder about the Maphis models.

I ran across this one recently and the modifications that have been made seem minor to me. I'm sure over time I can collect three correct pickups and the correct knobs to bring it back to original status. What are the general opinions of that? Is it worth buying now to restore at a later date? Would it be a good investment in that regard, or should I just consider it another "player" in the running?

That guitar could be put back to original condition fairly easy and not too expensive. He does have the 'make offer' option.

Have you ever held one of these guitars? They are heavy. If you are simply wanting a doubleneck to play a few songs during a set and not looking for a pricey collectible, there are other fairly inexpensive options out there. It looks like the correct three ply to me. Thick top layer over two thin layers.

The pickguards look right to me as well, but the body looks refinished.

Aaron, also notice the pickguards are all evenly coloured; possible replacement (parts) would highly likely show up different.
Sarah, looks to me to be an inviting restoration project; and as Danny pointed out, there is the "make an offer" option. Still it'll be a bit of money but semiengly a good investment

No I haven't held one of these. Actually, I don't think I've even seen one in person. If I had been smart I would have asked Artie to let me hold one. Duh! Anyway, I'm pretty much spoiled by pro level gear and have little patience for inexpensive copies, etc. The exception being the Ibanez SG copies, but they are not inexpensive anymore! I've got $2,000 to spend. I need one that I can play for a whole set or some period of time.

The Gretsch Duo Jet 12/6 I played for about 1 1/2 hrs standing with a strap and it was fine. Elaine gave me some pointers on strapping up a double neck to reduce shoulder weight. Slick! Anyway, the Gretsch double neck weighs 14 pounds and after 1 1/2 hrs I was still fine with it.

The Gretsch sounds awesome with the Filtertrons on both necks. I have no idea how the Maphis sounds. My first priority is playability and tone, second is investment. I'm sure I can get either the Gretsch or the Maphis for $2K. I know I can get the Ibanzez copy for $2k if I'm patient. The Gretsch and the Maphis both have a "coolness" factor though!

Oh and I forgot. If I did get this Maphis model I would certainly want to restore it to it's original hardware over time. Does anyone have any idea what one weighs?
