Yes Dennis and Sarah! the description zub gives rang a bell with me too. I wouldn't go by what's engraved on the brass plate, not a standard feature; it might just as well have read 1859 for that matter.
About the "Mosrite of California" on the bridge cover, I remember thinking it being a private endeavour and that the owner at the time could possibly have been engraver by trade.
More importantly, the development of the famous Ventures model Mosrite reached it's definitive stage in 1962/63 and the bass version -which evolved from it- could therefore not have existed prior to 1962/63.
If the serial number indeed points to a date around 1963 (sounds more credible) then you have something special on your hands zub; in any case, congratulations on your purchase!
