Upside down neck plate?

Virtually every time on eBay when there is a early 70's issue bass or guitar, the neck plate is installed upside down. Now in order for these to be installed upside down, the counter sink screw holes have to be reamed on the off side. I'm guessing that this is left over stock from the demise of the P Street Bakersfield factory, and these were either rejects as being counter sunk reamed on the wrong side or they were for left hand guitars. Has anyone else noticed this or have an answer?

Andy Mosely was selling 12 of these on ebay awhile back that were like that. I wasn't sure if the pics on the auction were flipped or they were left handed guitar plates or like you mentioned left over from the p-street factory. Kevin

That's interesting Kevin. Andy was always saying he bought the parts he was selling on eBay from the bankrupt Bakersfield Mosrite factory. It is common knowledge that Semie was using parts from this defunct business. So, they were probably made for left handed guitars but production never really geared up for large quantities of lefties before going belly up. Semie probably used what ever was available.

I have just check both of my Mosrites from the same era. My sunburst is bolted just like the sunburst shown above. However, my black bass is not. The serial number on the black one is lower than on my sunburst.

Leftover plates for the lefty basses is a certainly a possibility. I'll try to post a photo.

Hi All!! Most of my 70's Mosrites have this backwards plate. My theory is maybe the fabricator made a backwards batch. Mosrite would have pointed this out and had it corrected, without necessarily having to return the incorrect parts. When Semie was not doing as well, they would have been perfect for his new models. No additonal expense and fully functional. Just my 2 cents and I have no idea if this is the case!

hey,

I checked my 70's mosrites, and both are this way too, even though one is a 72 model, and the other is a 74. It sounds to reason that it could simply be a mistake made by the metalsmith making the parts, but I wonder if maybe it was done on puppose to have room on the 2 screws holding the neck joint under the neck pickup. since I don't have any other semie made ventures one/mark ones, i can't compare the two.
interesting note: I bought a set of mosrite luthering templates, and on it, the neck plate goes the other way, along with the japanese mosrite part.
