I have recently acquired what I hope is an original Mosrite. It was authenticated by the reputable music store that had it. The serial number 2648 is stamped into the fret board at the 22 fret. What I have not seen in the many photos online is the date, in this case 7/68, stamped into the fretboard after the last fret. Is this common.

That number is quite low for a Mark 1, but I think once the Mosrites pulled their sponsorship the numbers might have changed, started over with some other prefix. I have only seen Mosrites with the serial number stamped on the last fret and then the date might be written inside the neck pocket if you take the neck pickup out but I have never seen a serial number + date but I have mostly only looked the Ventures models.

My 1965 Ventures bass has date stamps on both the body and neck with a 4 digit serial number. The bass I bought a year ago has no date stamps and a B+3 digit serial number. From what I've gathered on this forum for a few years Semie must have had dice that he rolled every time he needed a serial number. :D

None of mine have a date stamp next to the serial number, I have 11 or so "real" Mosrites all with similar serial number variations often seen, but anything seems possible on a Mosrite! Gotta love 'em.

pics would help but I think it's safe to say that it is a Mosrite and not a clone. Mosrite did everything their own way, including serial numbers :)
