1964 Ventures model

Postby Bob Shade » Sat Jun 25, 2022 8:22 am

Did anyone see the 1964 Ventures model on Facebook someone purchased that had a walnut looking re-fin, non original pickup rings, grovers, and a Vibramute made into a stop tailpiece?

I wonder why someone would do that? I guess a while back these were just looked at as "used" guitar that will never have any value. Or maybe he thought he was making it better. Who knows?

Walnut stain and varnish was a normal DIY refinish back in the 60s, 70s & 80s as guitars were just tools of the trade, not collectibles. I am guilty of refinishing my 1962 Stratocaster a month after purchasing it brand new as I didn't like the color. It was a white see through blonde Ashe body. I first painted it red with black burst with lacquer given to me by Semie Mosely at his Panama Lane shop, then repainted it orange with brown shading. Remember this was the hippie era. I finally stripped it back to bare wood and painted it my favorite color, sunburst. Fortunately I still have the guitar. In hindsight I wish I would have re-done the white see through blonde finish instead of the sunburst as it is my least favorite go to guitar. BTW, I did that S/B refin in 1992 so it has aged nicely. I'd have to say my favorite guitar is my Ellison Custom candy apple red Mosrite clone.

I saw it also. I can guess maybe it happened in the 70s and some hippie had no idea how perfect Mosrites are already as designed by Moseley. The guy, possibly a hippie had to have everything organic so went for a walnut finish.
