I would imagine that the serial number is a good indication of quantity. Yours being #678 tells me they made at least that many and likely more. One way to date your amp is to look at the pot codes on each knob. It will be a seven digit code likely beginning with either 134 or 137. For example, 1346823. IF you can jot as many of those code numbers down and post them, I think we can fairly accurate with dating the amp.

Pulled the chassis out of my BG500 amp planning on taking it up to Ann Arbor, Mich. to have a technician check it out did notice some of the capacitors need to be replace. And look at the pot codes they all have the same number 1376713.

According to Pot Code Reader, this potentiometer ( 1376713) was made by CTS Corporation (Chicago Telephone Supply) in the 13th week of 1967.

Well I ended up shipping my BG500 amp 3wks. ago to Tone Tron Amps in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The technician name is Jeffrey Falla, after talking to him he actually knew about the amp and the problems they had with them. Just got done talking to him on the phone. As expected had to replace the capacitors also ask him what he thought of the design. He thinks the design isn't terrible and isn't that much different from other moderate budget solid state amps of that era.
He said there is one design quirk he's trying to work out regarding the vibrato/tremolo effect. The main issue with this amp is that there is an internal balance adjustment. That at one extreme gives you huge tremolo/vibrato but at the expense of the preamp gain. So when you turn down the depth the amp is nearly silent, if you turn off the vibrato/tremolo sound comes back. If you move the balance to the other extreme, you have all of your preamp gain but no tremolo/vibrato. He said this is a design quirk. But he said there is something he's going to try to see if he can get it to work the right way. Other than that the amps works and the Fuzz Rite works great, he said there is a lot of fuzz there. And what he is changing me is reasonable also.

Well I'm working on a project on my BG500. Using a Fender Deluxe Reverb chassie and using a brushed aluminum for the front face panel. I decided on having it as a single channel amp the controls are going to be volume, treble, bright control instead of a switch bass, reverb with a dell control and a tube driven tremolo. Going to use the orginal BG500 foot switch which also will be mounted on the front like the orginal. This will be mounted into the BG500 cabinet using the 15" JBL DF30 speaker. Also the orginal chassie will be saved.
