I live in a small town in Eastern KY., where the entire economy centers around coal mining. There used to be a lot of little family owned shops, etc., that did quite well, as a lot of folks here have money. People here used to grow gardens and were proud of the vegetables they grew. People here were hard workers, and most were physically in good shape.
Enter Walmart, about 10 years ago. I mean a gigantic "Super Walmart." The entire personality of the region changed. Most of the family owned shops have been forced out. The only locally owned businesses that seem to have survived are tanning spas and tobacco shops. Hardly anyone grows gardens anymore, as they have discovered frozen, processed foods. What passes for fresh vegetables at Walmart, I think are made of a synthetic plastic, sort of like what McDonald's puts in their hamburgers. They have absolutley no taste. Walmart recently had to do a remodel, so they could widen the checkout lanes, as people here have gotten so fat, they no longer could fit in between the cash registers. Diabetes has now become an absolute epidemic in Appalachia. A huge portion of the formerly blue collar working populace, has discovered that if they get so fat, their legs will no longer support their bodies, lo and behold, the government will take care of them, so they no longer have to work. All they have to do is sit on the couch and watch their 80 inch Chinese HD TV's (courtesy Walmart), and send their 300 lb. 12 yr. old to Walmart with a stack of food stamps (courtesy Uncle Sam), to bring them home fresh supplies of potato chips, pastries, frozen pizzas, potted synthetic meat, cases of diet (??) Pepsi, and lots of cheap Chinese toys painted with lead based paint. (a fat kid can never have too many toys)
The ironic thing is, if you do bother to go to the few other stores in the area, you discover that Walmart prices are not all that cheap. It's kind of an illusion. Maybe another "ray" Sarah forgot to mention.
Whatever -it's totally ruined rural American culture...................
