Are you using the same techniques that you learned from Semie, for the most part?

Refinishing or finishing a guitar takes such skill, judgement, experience, and patience that I just can't do it. My problems began back in 1961 when I tried to paint my first model plane, and they never got any better!

I also like the headstock logos.

You have every right to be proud.

Funny that you mentioned that. The very first time I saw Semie, he was standing outside the door of his little shop spraying a sunburst finish. Being a kid, I ran up to him in total amazement and asked him if he had a spray booth. He said this is my spray booth, I just step out the door and start painting here in my spray booth. Well, I've been using that same spray booth ever since.

As for technique, it's basically the same generic method that virtually all guitar builders use. However, with my ancient worn out equipment it is pure luck when it turns out right.

Is it possible that Semie was also using worn-out equipment back in the day? Maybe that's why your bursts look so authentic!

Hardly! I may not be able to put a finish on a guitar, but I have watched others do it and there is not that much luck involved, to my eye.

There will be things that go wrong, but the people who are good at this-- and we on this forum are lucky enough to know some of them, including Danny-- have a system, and their system includes how to deal with what goes wrong so that the job still comes out right.

It never ceases to amaze me what these skilled folks can achieve. It has added a lot of beauty and joy to this old world.

Danny, I can ONLY comment with the negatives that can happen down here in South Fllorida although you probably have the same problem
on the West Coast as well...How the heck do you keep the bugs (flies, mosquitos, spiders, etc) off the guitar while the Finish is drying?!?!

Well, lacquer dries really fast but I do have a cure for when a bug gets onto wet paint, and it happened once on the project. It's called, 'sand and do that area over'. I had plenty of problems from a bug to a blob of thinner blasting out at the wrong time right on the front in the yellow and red. Fortunately it wasn't too difficult to re do. That's precisely why I don't do this for income, I no longer have the patience. Thank goodness for the air brush.
