Hallmark Spun Knobs - Marking

Postby LOSTVENTURE » Sat Aug 07, 2010 4:15 pm

Call me obsessed, but I really like to know what position the knobs on my guitar are set at. You know, primarily, are they at the "10" position or not. With the spun knobs that come on the Hallmark (and some other clones as well) you can't tell where they are. Is there an easy way to mark the knob so that you know what the position is. Currently I have used a magic marker to put a little dot on the skirt where the "10" would be. Since I don't really rotate the knobs far from that position, this works for me, as long as the light is just right. But it is a temporary fix until somebody comes up with something better. Any ideas out there? I really like the knobs that are on the guitar, for historical reasons, so keep that in mind.
Thanks,
Don

Semie use to drill a small 1/16" hole on the skirt of the knob. My '64 has that little hole and it does help.

Thanks dubtrub. Now I'm trying to work up the courage to take a drill to the knob. I guess that it takes a very sharp metal bit to do the job. I just don't know if I can get the stability to do it. I don't want to go very deep do I?

Maybe Bob Shade can supply you with extra knobs to experiment with. Keep the unmodded ones in the pocket of your Hallmark OHSC in case of future (forced) sale of the guitar.

Hi Veenture. I did say something to Mr. Shade a couple of months back about marking the knobs. He had no plans to modify them at that time. I guess I should call back and see what a set of spares might cost. Just in case. I have been known to be dangerous with a drill, and having recently lost the vision in my left eye, it could really get exciting in a hurry.posting.php?mode=reply&f=8&t=3452#

Be sure and use a sharp pointed center punch to mark the starting point to guide the drill bit giving the bit an impression to keep it in place. Otherwise it will slip off the surface and break the bit. Just to make sure we're all on the same sheet of music. Be sure and remove the knob before starting this project. It should be held secure in a vise.

Thanks again dubtrub. It is starting to sound a little more possible all the time. I appreciate the safety aspects that you mentioned that I had not thought of, other than taking the knob off of the guitar of course. I am thinking that a guy at work, who is a part-time carpenter (with the tools to do the job), might be someone to talk to.

Hey Don, very sorry to hear about the loss of vision in your left eye. Please be careful now, hear!

Last year I started a thread myself about the Hallmark Spun Knobs; perhaps you'd like to read it if you haven't already ;)

The rubber washer would be easier to mark (spot of paint, etc), and completely changeable - without altering anything.

Now that is one smart solution :geek: ...and only on the Mosrite Forum, ladies and gentlemen!

(Good thinking Dennis GattonFan ;) )
