Grunge Guitar

Me and a buddy of mine have given up on punk rock and turned our sights on grunge. Being 17, the pure awesomeness of Cobain and Nirvana just spoke to us, thus why we did grunge. Side tracking, not good. Need a grunge guitar. I have a Dean MLX, Squier Strat, Cort Tele and the Eastwood. What would be good for that grungeish sound? Also any other guitars that are good?

I was never a huge Grunge fan but I think the Grunge pedal is the most mis-named pedal going. I played Ramones style punk and one time when I was trying out a bunch pedals I reluctantly gave the Grunge a whirl and found it gave me the hugest most aggressive Punk sound I've ever heard. I decided it was the one for me,much to the concern of people who would look at it and say " But you're not into grunge. " but when they heard the monster sound they all knew why. It's still my favourite pedal.

the irony in all this is that grunge and punk is really the same thing. grunge was just a marketing term used in the 90's to make punk sound more acceptable to mass audiences. the kurt guitar sound is often times summed up with electro harmonix/sovtek effects pedals. the distortion sound is a big muff, and the chorus sound is from a EH poly chorus. if you listen to a lot of black flag, you can hear where kurt was influenced for his guitar tone.

besides, if you can't play punk, then you're probably on the right track anyway. you're not suppose to know how the play, that's the whole point to punk rock. if you don't believe me take a look at the band the germs. here's a band that decided who played what instrument by drawing straws! don't worry about how good you are, just get out there and make some noise. just make sure it's loud enough to annoy your parents

You already have a Univox Hi Flyer, right? I think yours is a Phase 4 but it should still have the pickups that the Phase 3 model is known for. You should be able to get close to early and late Nirvana tone with it, Kurt played a lot of Hi Flyers in the early years and occasionally played them in 1993. He mostly played Fenders during the Nevermind era. As for In Utero tone you'd have to be very determined to replicate it because Kurt played a damaged amp for songs on that album.

I agree with oipunkguy Nirvana is a punk band really. When I think of grunge I lean more towards "Loud Love" by Sound Garden or Tad's "8 Way Santa" Screaming Trees etc. Don't worry about labels just make songs that you would like to listen to and see were it takes you
