Vintage Mosrite Questions.

Hello, I just registered here and would like to ask some questions about vintage and modern Mosrites. Should I just contain all of my questions in one topic or make another topic in the modern forum? I think I should keep them all here.

Anyway...

I am rather uneducated about Mosrite models. I know that my favorite guitarist Ricky Wilson played Mosrites and apparently favored Mark I models with straight neck pickups. What kind of model are these compared to ones with angled neck pickups? Other than the pickups being straight I noticed the higher frets are harder to access on these models. Also do these have more flat edges similar to a telecaster compared to other models?

About the modern ones... I've been to Ed Roman's site and have wondered, What is the difference between Mosrites of the Ranger models compared to other models, other than them being generally cheaper?

There are actually separate Thread Discussions, one being "Mosrite Guitars and Basses Vintage USA" and another "Modern Mosrites and Clones." But what you REALLY need to do is allow yourself sometime to 'get your feet wet' because trust me, there is so much info already on this Forum, that if you can't find it, then it was a rumor .....J/K!

Actually Ricky played a "Ventures II Model" (MARKV) which BTW had the straight pick ups with no polepieces (no screws in the p'ups), and yes there were the last 5 frets going into the body which made it difficult to get up there for the high solos, due to the MARK V was a 'Student Level Type' guitar, but most people don't care . The MARK I in which you are referring to was "the Ventures Model" which had the slanted neck p'up. On that model there were only between 2-3 frets going into the body.

"Ventures Mark II" Is confusing to me because I thought that was what the Johnny Ramone models were called. Am I missing something here?

Yeah, a lot of people get mixed up with this, because there were actually 2 different "Ventures II Models."
Johnny's was what they called the 'slab body' style (1st Generation) and Ricky's had the German Carve body style (2nd Gen).
Johnny's - Ventures II (MARK II) 1st Generation
Ricky's--- Ventures II (MARK V) 2nd Generation
p.s. The PIC you provided is the same model that Ricky used (MARK V) .

Happy to learn that Ricky Nelson played a Mosrite Mark II too. (Hope it was a red one like mine?)

Love Ricky's role in movies "Rio Bravo" (one of my favorite western movies) Too bad he died so young.

Dennis: Thanks for clearing that up, I think I'll just refer to them as "Mark II" and "Mark V" That makes sense. Also, just for the fun of it I'll say since Ricky's Mark V was missing a strap peg he taped his straps on and even used belts sometimes.

Desert Surfer: Well, We seem to be confusing artists here. I'm referring to The B-52's original guitarist, actually. I never knew Ricky Nelson played music, I'd seen him in some of the "Ozzie and Harriet" episodes on TV though. I'll have to check his songs out!

I saw the B-52s around the time they released "Private Idaho" at the Agoura in Miami. Ricky played at least 4 different Mosrites that night, mainly because they are set up with his own tunings. Some of them only had four strings. Can't say if they were all Mark Vs.

Wow! Of all of the PIX I've ever seen of R. Nelson, he was always playing some kind of Rickenbacker.
But seeing him on the front cover with a Gretsch makes it nice and different for a change .
